At 5:55 a.m. on Friday, July 19, 2024, Robert Sunris, 74, was found fatally stabbed in the chest, with a knife near his body, in a home on Maple Street, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer said.

An investigation determined Louis Gargiso, Sunris' roommate, was the person responsible and he was arrested that same day, authorities said. He has remained in Ocean County Jail since his arrest, Billhimer said.

Sunris' obituary says he was a Neptune High School graduate and served four years in the U.S. Air Force, spending most of his time in Thailand. After returning home, he worked various jobs in Monmouth County before spending 20 years at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst until retirement, his obituary continues.

Sunris loved fishing, shooting, and weekend trips with his brother Tom, and was a devoted Mets and Jets fan who rarely missed a game.

Gargiso faces charges of murder and multiple weapons offenses, authorities said.
